Hey! Thanks for stopping by and joining us on the hunt. I hope you’re having fun.

Let me introduce myself. I’m Rachel Hauck, a New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author. But who’s really tracking, right?

I love a great story with a touch of romance, drama, humor and a hint of elegance. I started out my publishing journey with romance and chick lit back in ’04.

I penned a 3 book women’s fiction series with country singer Sara Evans. After which I wrote The Wedding Dress, the first of several split time novels—stories with an historical and contemporary timeline—followed by a royal romance series.

Such great fun! I was honing my author chops!

Romance and devotion, humor and drama play a roll in all the stories. Whether they have any elegance is for you to decide. You can learn more about me and all my books right here as well as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. But keep reading to check out my latest book and hear some tricks I use to create realistic royal characters.

Rachel HauckWriting Realistic Royals

When I started writing royal stories, I’d been a long time fan of the British royals. But I didn’t know much about them beyond newsstand headlines.

After the first draft of Once Upon A Prince, the first of the Royal Wedding Series, I realized my fictional country needed a history, a government, a social culture place smack dab in the middle of our real world.

Next I had to invent things like royal cyphers, letters patent, unique names for branches of royal service and layers of aristocracy and nobility.

Setting fictional royals in a world we all know is a good way to make them accessible to our imagination.

For each character, I worked through the Story Equation. This technique shapes each protagonist’s strengths, weaknesses and creates the Dark Moment Story. The DMS is an event from childhood, or even adulthood, that caused a wound that needs to be healed. A real life example is when the Windsor princes lost their mother.

In To Love A Prince, the first of the True Blue Royal series, Prince Augustus, had a traumatic life event. While millions watched, his fiancé left at the altar. That sort of humiliation created a big wound. But it was my job to bring him through it. 🙂

Knowing what healing and truth a character needs sets up the external plot. Everything that happens outside of the protagonist pushes and pulls at the hidden things inside. In the end, the  prince and/or princess, the commoner they’re in love with, find truth and love.

Of course, even in writing realistic royals, there needs to be a bit of “magic.” As the story unfolds, I look for spiritual elements that allow the supernatural to break into the character’s very natural world.

It’s not an easy journey for me, or the characters, but in the end, when I arrive at the Happily Ever After, the characters have changed. And you know what? I’ve changed a little too.

To Love A Prince - Rachel HauckDaffodil Caron is not a princess, even though she once dreamed of being one. After all, she grew up as a playmate to royal princes, running through the halls of Perrigwynn Palace and dining with the queen. But the day she stumbled upon a royal secret, everything changed.

Flash forward eighteen years, and Daffy’s living a sweet, non-royal life. A skilled art curator for the Royal Trust, she has friends, a flat in the heart of the city, and a handsome, successful fiancée. The last person on her mind is Gus, a prince she once called her best mate.

HRH Prince Augustus is no longer “Prince Pudgy,” as caricaturized by the press, he’s charming and gorgeous, possessing a world-famous smile. But when he’s jilted at the altar by an American heiress as millions of people around the world watched, the spare heir to Lauchtenland’s ancient House of Blue escapes, finding solace on a Florida beach.

A year as a regular bloke allows him to rethink his purpose. He’s half decided his calling is to pour pints at a tiki bar, rather than serving his country and the Family.

Until an accident on the beach with a Frisbee changes his course.

Despite his long hair and beard, Daffy recognizes her prince, and their childhood friendship is renewed. She assures Gus Lauchtenland needs him, giving him the courage to return home.

When Daffy and Gus find themselves on assignment to Hadsby Castle in preparation for his brother’s wedding, their friendship blooms into affection.

But Gus cannot, will not, trust his heart again. Daffy’s engaged. And she also remains a royal family outcast because she knows the Queen’s secret.

When affection grows into love and secrets are exposed, trust is destroyed. Gus must choose which is stronger: the lies of his past or the hope of his future. And Daffy must face every fear to prove she will forever love a prince.

“Another compelling royal story by the master of princely tales!” – Susan May Warren, USA Today bestselling, RITA award-winning novelist
